Despite the fact that Moishe the Beadle was a poor foreign Jew living in Sighet, a Transylvanian town in modern-day Romania, the townspeople liked him due to his awkwardness, timidness, and reserved personality. He was Elie Wiesel’s mentor in studying Kabbalah, and the two would read for hours on end. However, after fulfilling his prophecy, he was seen as only wanting pity and was thought to have gone mad. Moishe fled from death, but returned to Sighet to warn people of the impending danger. Unfortunately, no one listened to him and on the seventh day of Passover, the Germans arrested the leaders of the Jewish community, leading to Elie and his family being put in ghettos. Moishe the Beadle, despite being a minor character, proved to have unexpected significance in Elie Wiesel’s Night.
