Myrtle Wilson was a minor character in The Great Gatsby who had an affair with Tom Buchanan, a wealthy man from upper class New York. She wanted a better life for herself, and saw New York City as a way to climb the social ladder and project herself as a high class woman. Myrtle had a strong desire to improve her situation, but her choice of Tom as a means to do so ultimately led to her death. When Tom sent Daisy and Gatsby back in Gatsby’s car, Myrtle thought it was Tom driving and ran out to meet it, resulting in her untimely demise. Her death was tragic, but it had a greater meaning as it was materialism that caused it, leading to the conclusion of the novel and the deaths of George and Gatsby.
