The story of Frankenstein is largely focused on revenge. After the monster is rejected by the one family he thought would accept him, he is filled with depression and despair. To express his rage, he destroys inanimate objects instead of something valuable. He still has hope that if he can find his creator, he will be accepted. The reader then sees a more personal side of the beast, as he is hurt and lonely. When the incident with the girl by the river occurs, the monster is shot in the arm. This only fuels his hatred for humanity, especially his creator, Dr. Frankenstein. He wants Victor to feel the same pain and desperation he has been exposed to, so he seeks revenge. He knows he has the power to make Victor feel the same hopelessness he has felt, so he kills Victor’s loved ones.
