Geoffrey Chaucer is known as the Father of English Literature due to his literary innovations. He was the first to write stories and poems in the language of the common people, Medieval English, which was different from the Latin and French used by the educated. His works, such as “The Canterbury Tales,” are still acclaimed today and are considered masterpieces. Chaucer used rhyming couplets in iambic pentameter to satirize medieval culture and address social issues and human immorality. His frame narrative in “The Canterbury Tales” is about a group of travelers on a pilgrimage to Canterbury to pay homage to Thomas Becket, and the inside story is a compilation of short stories about the different travelers. Chaucer was able to illustrate the life of his time through his experiences for all levels of society, from the plowman to the knights. Few writers have been able to create such a masterpiece, and it took many years before Shakespeare came along and was able to represent all members of society while entertaining them in a direct and honest manner.
