The inn was the place where twenty-nine pilgrims gathered to begin their journey to Canterbury to visit holy shrines and the relics of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. The pilgrims met at the inn with the intention of paying homage to the saint, offering prayers and thanksgiving for the favors received.
