Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a renowned American humanist, novelist, poet, and lecturer who advocated for social reform. She was a pioneering feminist who served as an inspiration for later generations of feminists due to her progressive ideas and lifestyle. In 1884, Gilman married Charles Walter Stetson and the following year gave birth to their daughter, Katharine Beecher Stetson. After the birth, Gilman experienced a severe case of what is now known as post-partum depression. She sought treatment from Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell of Philadelphia and underwent the controversial “Rest Cure,” which included extended bed rest. Despite the treatment, her depression persisted and she eventually separated from her husband in 1888 (they divorced in 1894). Gilman then moved to Pasadena, California with her daughter and began her professional writing career. In 1892, she published her renowned semi-autobiographical story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” which was based on her experience with the Rest Cure. The story follows a woman who is sent to “rest” in a rented summer home and descends into madness. Gilman sent a copy of the story to Dr. Mitchell, but never received a response.
