Victor Frankenstein is so horrified by his own creation that he immediately abandons it, as seen in the quote “Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room, and continued a long time traversing my bedchamber, unable to compose my mind to sleep. At length lassitude succeeded to the tumult I had before endure; and I threw myself on the bed in my clothes, endeavouring to seek a few moments of forgetfulness”. This is the first example of Victor’s lack of responsibility, which is further developed throughout the novel. Mary Shelley uses this to demonstrate the consequences of not taking responsibility, especially when it comes to creating something. Victor has taken a bite from the forbidden tree of knowledge by bringing life to something that should never have been brought to life. He is not prepared for the consequences of his actions, and he turns away from his own project, neglecting it. After the Monster comes to life, Victor is scared of it due to its size and appearance, and he does not take responsibility for it, even though he should have. This lack of responsibility causes the Monster to be ignorant of human ways, and it leads to a cycle of pain between Victor and the Monster.
