Fitzgerald paints Gatsby as a humble man who stands out from the rest of the wealthy elite. This, along with Gatsby’s connection to organized crime and his ability to get away with speeding, suggests that Gatsby is involved in illegal activities. This contrast between Gatsby and the world he desires to be a part of shows that he does not fit in with either the old or new money.
