Thomas Malory’s version of King Arthur’s death in “Le Morte d’Arthur” is the most widely accepted. According to this version, Arthur was betrayed by his own nephew, Mordred, and returned to England to fight him in a battle at Camlan. After a long and bloody fight, Arthur dealt Mordred a fatal blow, but was himself mortally wounded. He asked Sir Bedevere to return his sword Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake, and when Bedevere did so, a hand rose from the water to catch it and disappeared. Arthur then died, and his body was taken to the mystical island of Avalon. Some versions of the story suggest that Arthur did not die, but was instead taken to Avalon to return when Britain needed him. This belief in Arthur’s return, known as the “Once and Future King” legend, has been a source of inspiration for many writers and artists.
